Peace 4 Leaves

a greater story comes out of the wind, slipping like a cool breeze through the cracked windows to ruffle the curtains draped over the spider plants potted in your study, wafting the shadows in a slow waltz over the granite busts of former city boosters and ancient heroes whose stone eyes look out the window at the comings and goings of future generations without pupils, eyes that never close, telling the story of Time and its Indifference, and finding something beautiful in that bleak, blue-grey nebula. It’s pointless, you might think, to try and stand in the face of it, to do anything besides be a leaf blowing in the desert breeze. Trees, like people, are born unto their existence without a choice, some are staked into narrowly confined stanchions of concrete, while others prosper in peace and comfort behind the high walls of elegant gated neighborhoods free from oppression and close to a bountiful water source. It’s fatalistic. Like the penultimate track of Trees, life too is fruitless. And yet there is infinite bliss in that nothingness. There is peace forever in the leaves.
